Understanding Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer begins when cells in the bladder grow out of control. Most cases start in the inner lining of the bladder, called the urothelium.¹

Over time, the cancer may:

Stay in the inner lining

Grow into the bladder muscle

Spread beyond the bladder

How far the cancer has grown helps guide how it is described and treated:

Non–muscle invasive: Limited to the inner layers

Muscle-invasive: Has grown into the bladder muscle

Advanced: Has spread beyond the bladder

These categories help your care team recommend the most appropriate treatment.²
Signs and Symptoms
Blood in the urine (called hematuria) is the most common sign. Urine may appear pink, red, or reddish brown—or look normal, with blood only found on testing.¹

Other symptoms may include:

Frequent urination

Pain or burning during urination

Urgency with little output

Back or pelvic pain

These symptoms can have many causes; they should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider.¹
Sub-types
Bladder cancer is not one disease. The main sub-types include:

Urothelial carcinoma (most common)

Squamous cell carcinoma (linked to long-term irritation or infection)

Adenocarcinoma (rare)

The sub-type helps guide treatment decisions and expected outcomes.¹

Causes, Risk Factors, and Risk Reduction  
Bladder cancer develops when cells grow out of control. The exact cause is not always known, but several factors may increase risk:¹

Smoking (the leading risk factor)

Increasing age (most diagnoses occur after age 55)

Being male

Exposure to certain chemicals (such as dyes, rubber, leather, and paint)

Prior cancer treatments (such as certain chemotherapy or radiation)

Long-term bladder irritation (infections or catheter use)

Personal history of bladder cancer

Inherited conditions such as Lynch syndrome
Risk Reduction
You may be able to lower your risk by:

Not smoking or quitting smoking

Limiting exposure to harmful chemicals

Seeking care for ongoing urinary symptoms

Awareness of risk can support earlier detection.¹
Screening, Detection, Diagnosis, and Staging
There is no routine screening test for bladder cancer in people without symptoms.¹

If symptoms are present, your care team may recommend:

Urine testing

Imaging (such as a CT scan)

Cystoscopy (a procedure to look inside the bladder)

Biopsy to confirm cancer

After diagnosis, staging describes how far the cancer has spread. This helps guide treatment decisions and care planning.¹
Understanding Your Pathology Report
A pathology report provides detailed information about your cancer after a biopsy or surgery. It may include:

The type of bladder cancer

Tumor grade (how abnormal the cells look)

Depth of invasion (how far it has grown)

Whether cancer is present in surrounding tissue

Treatment
